Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new initialism came to light a couple of months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to care for a minor who has lost their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that violations are continuing. Officials has denied these accusations, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.

The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
