‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from gurney to success with the Basque club
Whenhe initial occasion the Spanish forward featured in the UK, an teenage appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he appeared in British turf, against Sunderland two months later, he converted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, indeed, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he scored again. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the Athletic striker says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is about to start; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu airport and a further journey to the UK, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Just saying those two words lights him up. This is proving a challenging campaign for the team, partially owing to the pressures of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. However, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.
In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway accompanied by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in 40 years. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are unique and returning after absence in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. Born to the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he went through a serious knee problem, being released, a drop in category and a recall before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. He left upset in 2020, aged 23, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. Particularly after last year which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
