“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. He left upset in 2020, aged 23, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
