Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom stated when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's current term as California's leader concludes in January 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent
The California governor has stepped forward as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, leveraging his digital presence and advocating for a initiative that would expand the party's representation in Congress in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. Duffy announced intentions to pull government money from California and threatened eliminating the power to grant CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," he said, after a recent fatal crash in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused three deaths and injured individuals.
His administration pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which permitted him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.
Duffy had earlier announced he was blocking $40 million from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Team
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office responded in a previous statement countering the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted survey found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an mean of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of over 40% to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while traveling several key regions that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The idea that a person who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
