Inter striker Lautaro Martínez netted a late double to secure his side a 2-0 victory at Pisa, keeping the visitors firmly involved in the Serie A title race in spite of a somewhat shaky display.

Led by manager Cristian Chivu, Inter now are placed third in the standings with 27 points, level with second-placed Roma and just one point adrift of table-toppers Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa occupy the 18th spot with 10 points.

Inter arrived in Tuscany aiming to get back on track after suffering a derby defeat by Milan recently, which was followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. However, they were forced to fight all the way by newly-promoted Pisa. The hosts created plenty of chances, but a clinical Inter broke the deadlock in the 69th minute mark when Argentinian Martínez smacked a first-time shot into the roof of the net. The attacker then tapped in from point-blank with seven minutes remaining.

In Spain, Real Sociedad staged a thrilling comeback from 2-0 down to level at home against Villarreal, only to lose to a late strike five minutes into added time. The visitors’ goals came from Ayoze Pérez shortly after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly pulled one back and Ander Barrenetxea leveled the score three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro had the final say deep into added time.

In the late Spanish match, Real Madrid journey to Girona needing a victory to return to the summit ahead of Barcelona, who recorded a 3-1 win over Alavés on the previous day.
