A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us verify the video.
We are verifying images and video shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
