Gus Atkinson added to England's injury problems when he left the field during Saturday's play of the fourth Ashes Test versus the Australians.
The right-arm seamer felt a problem in his hamstring immediately following a delivery that he bowled during the morning session.
The England team stated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and would spend time off the field for further assessment "in the coming hours".
The final Test of the tour in Sydney starts on Sunday, 4 January.
The visitors have been without strike bowlers one seamer with a knee problem and another paceman because of a side injury during this series.
Matthew Fisher was called up to provide backup.
His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, managing only three wickets.
He was left out from the previous Test, then recalled for the Boxing Day match to fill the void.
Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, claiming a couple of wickets in Australia's first innings, before adding 28 as a batsman as one of just three England players who passed ten runs.
After bowling one over late on the first day, he came back on Saturday morning and removed Scott Boland edging to the keeper.
Yet, on the final ball of the fifth over, he delivered a slower ball to the batsman and suddenly grabbed his left hamstring.
Atkinson was recalled for the Boxing Day Test after being left out the previous Test.
