The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
