Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.
One snub was enough. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to blend into the strategic frameworks and team pecking order required with England now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is a matter of harnessing it appropriately. Personal talent is important but England have learned the hard way that there is a cost when stardom prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham was given food for thought after not being selected of the previous squad. He observed the national side book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel discuss valuing the group’s energy and principles. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have made his squad place in serious doubt.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents rather than his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is willing to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German said. “Jude possesses the edge. It takes a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. We all must support him and build a atmosphere where he can channel this edge against rivals and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up the spotlight at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s final group games versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has struggled to perform well this year but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in his club's victory against the German side this week.
The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to include Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's style in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it disrupts the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who must play central. Tuchel wants him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this idea about him for years. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
He conceded there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“I think he is additionally so used to representing Man City in a specific system, to have a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
The manager talked about one star bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Interest is high.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options if he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in an international match versus Scotland in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.
“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an even better one.
