A high-ranking White House figure has inadvertently revealed information regarding plans to send an specialized military division to Portland, representing the most recent in a series of intelligence leaks linked with the current government.

Encrypted Communications Uncover Assignment Conversations

Anthony Salisbury, a top deputy to prominent administration strategist Stephen Miller, was seen using the encrypted messaging application in a open area to discuss a plan to deploy the army’s 82nd airborne division to Portland, the Democratic-run Oregon city which was frequently castigated by the president as being “war-ravaged.”

Screenshots of Salisbury’s encrypted communications were acquired by a publication, which stated they were sent while the official was “in plain sight of others” in Minnesota.

“Between you and I, I think the defense secretary just wants the top cover from the boss if anything goes wrong with the troops there,” a communication read.

Pentagon Chief Seeks Executive Authorization

In the messages, sent recently, Salisbury corresponded with Patrick Weaver, a top consultant to the US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, and other high-ranking government figures.

Weaver stated that Hegseth wanted Trump to expressly order him to deploy military personnel to Portland.

He added that Hegseth would rather to send in the national guard due to possible backlash over employing the regular military.

“The division is like our top tier rapid response unit for abroad. So it will cause a lot of media attention,” he continued. “Likely why he wants potus to tell him to do it.”

Specialized Division Background

The elite parachute unit is a highly trained army division which specialises in airborne operations and forcible entry operations. It was deployed in World War I and II and the wars in Southeast Asia and Afghanistan. Its leader was the last U.S. troop to pull out from Afghanistan in 2021.

Latest Assignment Claims

On the weekend, Hegseth said 200 members of the state militia would be sent “immediately.” On midweek, Trump claimed the militia was “now in place”; however, a regional media partner indicated that the unit had still not been dispatched.

Administration Response

In a statement to the publication, a White House representative verified Salisbury had been in Minnesota to be present at a funeral.

“Despite experiencing sorrow from the passing of a family member, Tony persisted with his important work on behalf of the public,” the spokesperson stated. “Nothing in these private conversations, that are shamefully being publicized by unethical reporters, is recent or confidential information.”

Prior Administration Leaks

The communications represent the most recent embarrassing leak associated with the administration. In March, the editor-in-chief of a major publication was accidentally included to a Signal chat that was being utilized by senior government officials, such as Hegseth and the vice-president, to talk about confidential military strikes on Yemen.

A month it was revealed that Hegseth had employed a second encrypted messaging group to send specific information about the attacks to his wife, his sibling and about a twelve additional individuals.
