Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a key Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official full international.
He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
